Presenting the petition for road safety cameras on the Forty Foot Road

Petition for safety cameras on the Forty Foot

In February 2006 Chatteris Liberal Democrats Christine Colbert and Chris Howes (together with the late Ramsey councillor Ray Powell) presented a 2000 name petition to Cambridgeshire County Council, calling for safety improvements on the notorious and lethal Forty Foot road.

A recent topical joke has been "What'll be completed first, the endlessly delayed 'guided bus', or the frequently postponed safety cameras on the Forty Foot?". Well, 46 months after we presented the petition, we are delighted to report that cameras are finally being installed along the Forty Foot road and should be operational by March 2010!

Your Focus team welcomes this long overdue safety measure, and the recent associated public awareness campaign. Your Team also wishes every success to Graham Chappel and 'Charlottes Way' Fenland Road Safety Campaign, which is fighting for improvements to all our dyke-side roads.

And we pay tribute to the work and support of Ray Powell, who sadly never lived to see the safety measures on what he described as "that hell road".
